The fungal spores elimination in drinking water by UV radiation

چکیده

UV radiation is effective on all microbial forms in water but lethal doses for every particular taxonomic group may be considerably different. Three species of Penicillium, Aspergillus and Cladosporium genera, 2 species of Alternaria and Fusarium and 1 species of Rhizopus and Paecilomyces genera were tested. Model waters were inoculated with spores of the mentioned monocultures. Three heterocultures: Aspergillus niger, Fusarium aquaductum and Paecilomyces varioti; Penicillium notatum, Aspergillus flaws, and Alternaria tenuis; Alternaria tenuis, Cladosporium fulvum and Rhizopus stolonifer were tested as well. The final spore concentration in water before the irradiation was approximately 104.1-l. The effects of various doses of UV radiation on the spores' germination and on the character of growth of mycelium were evaluated using cultivation methods. Our results show those bactericidal doses of UV radiation often effect stimulatory on the germination, growth rate and fructification of tested soil microfimgi in heterocultures. These microfungi were able to highten their growth and germination after very high doses of UV radiation. These experiments indicate the doses of UV radiation necessary for elimination of heterogenous fungal contamination may be different from lethal doses for monocultures of the same species. Our results confirm the necessity to determine the disinfection doses of UV radiation for every water experimentally, not only by theoretical calculation. Impact of Particle Aggregated Microbes on UV Disinfection. I: Evaluation of Spore–Clay Aggregates and Suspended Spores

Aggregation of microbes with particles can reduce the effectiveness of ultraviolet UV disinfection. This study evaluated the comparative impact of dispersed spores, dispersed spores mixed with clay particles nonaggregated , spore–spore aggregates, and spore– clay aggregates on UV disinfection performance in simulated drinking waters. Aggregates were induced by flocculation with alum and charact...

Inactivation credit of UV radiation for viruses, bacteria and protozoan (oo)cysts in water: a review.

UV disinfection technology is of growing interest in the water industry since it was demonstrated that UV radiation is very effective against (oo)cysts of Cryptosporidium and Giardia, two pathogenic micro-organisms of major importance for the safety of drinking water. Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment, the new concept for microbial safety of drinking water and wastewater, requires quantita...

Space microbiology.

The responses of microorganisms (viruses, bacterial cells, bacterial and fungal spores, and lichens) to selected factors of space (microgravity, galactic cosmic radiation, solar UV radiation, and space vacuum) were determined in space and laboratory simulation experiments. In general, microorganisms tend to thrive in the space flight environment in terms of enhanced growth parameters and a demo...

Sterilization of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis products by gamma radiation.

This study examines the effect of routine gamma radiation based on cobalt 60 on the viability, mosquito larvicidal activity, and density of bacillus spores in the soil. Although 1 g of unirradiated powder of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) contains on average 6.2 x 10(9) spores, no spores survived radiation doses of 20.6 kGy and higher. Radiation at a dose of 20-25 kGy caused a 20-30% ...

Impact of Particle Aggregated Microbes on UV Disinfection. II: Proper Absorbance Measurement for UV Fluence

Ultraviolet UV absorbance measurements are subject to significant error using a standard spectrophotometer when particles or aggregates that scatter light are present. True UV absorbance for highly turbid waters should be measured using integrating sphere IS spectrophotometry that allows the collection of reflected and transmitted radiation simultaneously. This is especially important when the ...
